The smile is an expression of positive emotions. Unfortunately, it also causes wrinkles.
What are smile lines?
Three types of smile lines exist :
– Crow’s feet wrinkles, at the outer edge of the eye. A special explanation is available (please see the relevant page)
– Naso-labial (nose to mouth) folds which go from the outer edge of the mouth to the nose. When we’re young, these are only visible when we smile. A special explanation is available (please see the relevant page)
– Clawed or crepey cheeks – Facial expressions make the muscles tense and de-contract, and consequently lead to lines. For example, when we smile, lines extend across the face, up to and including the crow’s feet. In our youth, these are only visible when we really beam, but they become permanent.
These lines are caused by muscle movement (especially the ‘mimic’ muscles like the eyelid orbiculars and the zygomatic muscles), but can also be inherited, or aggravated by life style, and sun exposure.
Smile lines: marks of expression or of ageing?
Smile lines start as dynamic expression lines, due to muscular contraction. With time, they become static, and are thus marks of ageing. Skin dryness and prolonged sun exposure (even when young) aggravate their formation.
Women seem to be more affected because their skin is finer and they have more fat around their cheekbones (when this fat starts to fall it leads to naso-labial lines or folds).
Can we prevent smile lines?
There is no way of preventing smile lines, other than never smiling. It is essential to keep skin hydrated, using creams but above all by medical care, such as hyaluronic acid skin booster injections, mesotherapy . You should avoid sun exposure, and follow a healthy lifestyle.
There is no home-made therapy for smile lines. Anti-ageing creams can improve them slightly.
Treating smile lines using aesthetic medicine
Hyaluronic acid injections
The treatment for naso-labial lines involves injecting hyaluronic acid. These treatments are explained in more detail in the relevant pages.
I favour injections of mildly reticulated hyaluronic acid (skin booster), with one to three sessions separated by two weeks to a month. Elsewise I suggest injections of medium reticulated hyaluronic acid (Restylane), where one or two sessions will suffice.
Hyaluronic acid can significantly improve the appearance of smile lines, but it can’t erase them.
