Hyaluronic acid for filling the cheeks
As used for ‘filling out cheeks’, hyaluronic acid has pride of place. This injection allows us to lift the smile-lines (naso-labial lines), and bitterness folds, as well as giving the face a lift. A more solid cheek gives a more relaxed appearance to the face, and a healthy colour.
A moderately reticulated restylane type product is used for the injections, but if the cheek is very hollow, a more strongly reticulated Restylane Perlane or Emervel type product will be used. Injections are by cannula, spreading the product in a crossed fan shape over the cheek, and creating a ‘support structure’ for the cheek.
The quantity injected must be right in order to fill out the cheek, and give a natural looking result. If this area is too abundantly filled, the cheek will look heavy, and extreme cases start to give the caricatured features of a squirrel. The doctor must be experienced, as excessive correction of this problem might not be visible when the face is at rest, but definitely so when the patient smiles.
Results are immediate and stabilise after a month.
The result will last for one or two years, and at the end of this time 50% of the product will remain.
